    Beginner’s Course in Multi-Shaft Weaving

Please note this course was originally posted as a table runner but has been changed to a bread bag.

    Overview.

During this three day, full day course, participants will learn the basic skills required for weaving by designing, measuring, dressing the loom and weaving on a four-shaft loom. Cotton yarn will be provided in an array of colours for you to choose from. At the end of the course, each participant will have created their very own bread bag; perfect for storing your artisan bread.  The final project will measure approx. 9 inches wide and 12 inches long and will be finished with a drawstring opening on one end. Each participant will be provided with a table loom for the duration of the course, plus a copy of the pattern and detailed instructions for the project.

Who is well suited for this course?

This is a beginners weaving course so no prior weaving experience is required. This will give you an opportunity to try multi shaft weaving before you decide if this is something you wish to pursue. However, it should be noted that weaving requires many repetitive hand and arm movements. If you have joint or back issues you may find this difficult.

    Program Outline.

    Day 1

Overview of program  - Discuss parts of loom and other weaving accessories and how they work- Discuss yarn and weaving patterns - Measure Warp - Start dressing the loom.

    Day 2

Finish dressing the loom - Chose weft colours - Wind the bobbins for the shuttles - Start weaving following the pattern provided - Hemstitch the beginning edge of the bread bag.

    Day 3

Finish Weaving - Hemstitch the edge - Take bread bag off the loom - Sew up bread bag on sewing machine - Quick trick to make a matching drawstring - Overall discussion on weaving covering the opportunity to join our local guilds,  where to buy equipment and yarn plus good resource books.

    What to bring:

Each participant needs to bring the following to class.

Lunch  - Coffee or tea is provided at the ACAC

    Scissors

    Pen and Paper for notes

    Measuring tape

    $200 Members         $230 Non Members

There is a materials cost of $15.00 per person that is to be paid directly to the instructor on the day of the class. This will cover the cost of the yarn used to allow each participant to choose their own weft colours as well as will include use of a loom at the ACAC.

In this half day workshop you will learn how to weave a garden obelisk from willow. Use this beautiful natural structure in your garden as a trellis for plants that love to climb. You can also repurpose it as part of your holiday decorating by adding a set of fairy lights, bows and greenery to dress it up with a festive flair.

This is a beginner friendly course, no prior weaving experience is required. Students should come prepared with a sharp pair of garden shears and room in the car to take home their finished creation. The finished obelisk will measure 14" diameter by 54" tall.

The cost for this class is $100 for Members and $115 for Non Members

There is a $50 material fee to be paid to the instructor on the day of the class (properly cured and prepared willow is difficult to access and involves many days of preparation by the instructor in advance of the class)

Painting is a wonderful way to relax, and channel your creative brain.  Students will learn paint application techniques for abstraction and tapping into your emotions as inspiration.  Students will begin to develop their own style of abstract painting through exercises, videos and practice!

Rebecca Christine Pettit, (who we all know as Christine).....has been specializing in painting semi abstract landscapes for over 15 years. Christine took classes at the Emily Carr School for the Arts in Vancouver and studied privately with Diana Kubichek a professor at Emily Carr. She has hosted many successful shows in this area and in BC.  The Arts Centre is very fortunate to have her as an instructor! Three classes, May 19, 26th and June 2nd, 2024 from 1-3 pm, will give students a grounding in intuitive painting, sufficient to create a complete intuitive landscape painting.

Rebecca's work has been described as; "(Her) works evoke a nostalgia for landscapes of the past, becoming studies of where we have been and how our surroundings profoundly affect our emotional memory. Both in meaning and in medium, these paintings are richly layered and visually stunning"

Former students of this class are still painting together, and selling their work through the Arts Centre and in Galleries in the area. This is an ideal workshop for new painters who are looking to explore the medium in a friendly and supportive environment.

Cost: Members $200; Non Members $230, HST included

Register on this website and pay with a credit card.  You must be registered and paid by May 1st to be considered registered.  As always, the Ailsa Craig Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel or reschedule this class.

Student Supplies: Sketch book, variety of acrylic brushes, including a 2 inch round, pencil, small canvas, acrylic paints in a variety of colours, easel if possible.

The ACAC would like to thank Christine for her support of the ACAC.

Does your youngster love to explore ways to create and express themselves?

In this camp students will learn wonderful ways to decorate and create fabric and accessories. They will make unique and colourful beads of any shape and size and turn them into a fashion accessory. Another day will be devoted to learning the art of macrame and how to decorate your room with a macramé wall hanging. Master a few basic embroidery stitches and use them in endless ways to decorate fabric or embellish a clothing item such as a t shirt or a pair of jeans. Create batik designs on fabric by using dye and hot wax. Stencil, stamp and play creatively in printing with premade designs and letters. Work directly on clothing to give new life to faded favourites or create new fabrics. Transform your handcrafted fabrics into a bag, pillow, or something else that you dream up.

Each day, bring a lunch, drinks, and snacks. Prepare for the outdoors with a hat, sunscreen, water bottle, and a Frisbie. Be ready on day two to give new life to a faded favourite by bringing one or more garments that you would like to decorate and personalize (optional). On days 3 and 4 wear clothing that can be stained or bring a painting smock or apron.

Each day will feature structured learning and outdoor time (weather permitting). You will also have the opportunity to play with mixed media and explore your own inspirations to create something unique. We will visit a local park where you can run off some steam or work outside on some of the crafts. Each day includes casual teaching of additional methods based on interest. The possibilities are endless. Look forward to exploring possibilities and your imagination.

Camp is suitable for ages 9-15 years. The camp will be lead by Ms Doreen Kool; a retired secondary school art teacher for Thames Valley and a talented mixed media artist in her own right.

NOTE: ALL YOUTH THAT PARTICIPATE IN YACAC ARE MEMBERS OF THE ACAC.
