Beginner’s Course in Multi-Shaft Weaving


Overview

During this 3 all day course the participant will learn the basic skills required for weaving. These include, designing, measuring, dressing the loom and weaving on a four-shaft loom. At the end of the course each participant will have created their very own table runner, approximately 9 inches wide and 24 inches long finished with a twisted fringe edge. Each participant will be provided with a table loom for the duration of the course, plus a copy of the pattern and detailed instructions for this project.  

Program Outline

Day 1 (Saturday)

  • ·       Overview of program
  • ·       Discuss parts of the loom and other weaving accessories and how they work
  • ·       Discuss yarn and weaving patterns
  • ·       Measure warp
  • ·       Start dressing the loom

Day 2 (Sunday)

  • ·       Finish dressing the loom
  • ·       Choose weft colours
  • ·       Wind the bobbins for the shuttles
  • ·       Start weaving following the pattern provided
  • ·       Hemstitch the beginning edge of the runner

Day 3 (Saturday)

  • ·       Finish weaving
  • ·       Hemstitch the edge
  • ·       Take runner off the loom
  • ·       Learn how to make a twisted fringe edge on both ends of the runner
  • ·       Overall discussion of weaving covering the opportunities for joining local guilds, where to buy equipment and yarn, good resource books

What to Bring

Each participant will need to bring the following:

  • ·       Their own lunch for the day (ACAC will provide coffee and tea)
  • ·       Scissors
  • ·       Pen and paper for notes

 Cost

Resulting from the generosity of Marsha, this intensive, three day class is able to be provided for the amazing price of $150 for members and $175 for non Members. Thank you Marsha! 

There is a materials cost of $15.00 per person that is to be paid directly to the instructor on the day of the class. This will cover the cost of the yarn used to allow each participant to choose their own weft colours as well as will include use of a loom in centre.
