Hand-knitted Icelandic Lopi Sweater

Students learn how to knit a traditional Icelandic sweater, with its beautiful and complex yoke pattern. They choose from the following patterns; for child, Kambur in size 1-4 and two patterns for adults, Dropar and Strýta in size S - XL. Student will start from the neck and knit down the yoke then knit the body and the sleeves separately. Students will finish the body and sleeves on their own. They will choose their own color, A is the main color. You can find a Supplier in Canada through Istex .is. or a yarn source of your choice. The teacher will bring the 3 patterns.

From 350g to 400g in one sweater

4,5mm and 3,5mm (US 7 and 4)circular needles 40 and 60cm, and 3,5mm and 4,5mm double pointed needles.

Gauge: 10x10cm = 18 sts and 24 rows in st st on 4,5mm needle

Dropar and Strýta,material; Álafosslopi 100 g balls              Size XS ( S, M, L, XL)                                                            
Dropar,color; A 6 (7,7,8,8), B 2 (2,2,2,2), C 1 (1,1,1,1) From 900g to 1100g in one sweater    
Strýta, color; A 5 (5,6,6,6) B 2 (2,2,2,2) C 2(2,2,2,2)

4,5mm and 6mm (US 7 and 10) circular needles 40 and 80cm, and 4,5mm and 6mm double pointed needles.

Gauge: 10x10cm = 13 sts and 18 rows in st st on 6mm needle

  • Materials supplied: Sweater Patterns – 3 to choose from.

Materials to bring: Students will bring the needles and Lopi wool according to the pattern above.

Guðrún Kolbeins Jonsdottir studied at the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts, graduating from the Textile Department in 1985 as a weaving teacher. She worked as a knitting designer for the wool company Álafoss and Hilda in Iceland , and is a member of The Textile Guild of Iceland and Guild of Icelandic Teacher of Weaving. She now teaches adult weaving courses in Icelandic Handcrafts Association.

NOTE: For full-day classes, students may bring a bag lunch, or have the option of dining in the Festival Cafe. Registered students will be able to order their lunch at the beginning of the class. Their lunch will be ready for them at the Cafe in the Community Centre, to avoid any lunch-time line-ups.
