Finger looping is a technique to make braids by manipulating loops of string on your fingers. No tools are needed. The technique was very en vogue in medieval Europe around 1300-1600, when braids were needed for purse strings, garters, lacing clothes, seal tags, decorative trim, seam re-enforcement and more. The braids can be simple or complex so all ages and levels of dexterity are welcome – from 5 to 95!

Materials to bring: Students should bring yarn left overs from knitting, any yarn that does not break easily, wool, cotton, silk or linen is ok, too. It should not be too thick, nor too fine which takes a long time to complete.

Maria Anna has taught spinning and other traditional woolcrafts for 20 years at Heimilisiðnaðarskólinn in Reykjavík (school for traditional handcrafts). She also dyes with plants, weaves, does fingerlooping, nålbinding and distaff spinning.
